Schmeissing: A Bathhouse Ritual
Rooted in Jewish and Eastern European traditions, Schmeissing was introduced to London’s East End by Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century. It remains a living practice at historic bathhouses in London such as Porchester Baths and New Docklands Steam Baths.
What is a Schmeisse?
The word “schmeisse” comes from Yiddish, meaning “to whip.” it’s a ritual of care and renewal performed in a steam room, it is a full-body scrub using a raffia brush, dense white soap suds, and the healing power of steam. The ritual concludes with a cold dousing or plunge, leaving the body revitalised.
