Schmeissing
Discover the Schmeisse A Bathhouse Ritual
Schmeissing is a powerful, time-honoured tradition rooted in Jewish and Eastern European bathhouse culture. Introduced to London’s East End by Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century, it remains a living practice in historic bathhouses such as Porchester Baths in Bayswater and New Docklands Steam Baths in Canning Town.
What Is a Schmeisse?
The word "schmeisse" comes from Yiddish, meaning "to whip." But this is no act of violence—it's an act of care. Performed in a steam room, the schmeiss is a vigorous full-body scrub using a specially made raffia brush, dense white soap suds, and the healing power of steam. After the treatment, a cold dousing and plunge into ice water completes the ritual, leaving the body revitalised.
